When you start the journey to, in my case, get a bilateral reduction; you are told to have multiple consultations until you find the surgeon that you can trust. I only had one consultation and that was with Rosie – and in that one consultation, my mind was made. Five months post-op, I do not regret that decision. Beginning with the consultation, I felt seen and understood every part of the process. Rosie’s team was very professional in their phone calls and helping me find a date that worked best for me. During consultation, Rosie was very attentive taking notes of, not just the problems I had been facing to date but also what I was hoping to achieve with the surgery. No detail was too small or unimportant, including describing what I wanted to be able to wear and my gender expression. Rosie also never shied away from explaining how scarring may affect me as Black woman and what could be done in the event of such issues. What I appreciated most about the consultation was that there was a clear understanding of the physical and biological importance of this surgery alongside a vocalised acknowledgement of the emotional importance too. Surgery went well and I appreciate that as I was recovering her team was able to add an extra appointment for me with the nurse to discuss and address a small concern I had. Technically, my post-surgery results, especially how light my scars are, and the shape are something I did not even know was possible to achieve when I was doing research. To say they are better than anything I had ever imagined is an understatement. Rosie was even kind enough to give me an extra post-op appointment just to make sure my scars were healing well and as expected. I could write a lot more and describe each meeting and each encounter, but the final thought would be the same. Rosie gave me a body I had only ever dreamed of and throughout the process I felt like an actual human being, listened to and trusted to also report how I was feeling.
